Matrix Or
Digital Touch Panels
Overview
Constructed of layers and conductive ITO
coating on the interior surfaces. The ITO coating is etched away or
selectively applied to form rows on layer and columns on the
opposite layer. When it is assembled the rows and columns form a
‘matrix’ of switches.
Advantages
- Easy to
interface with a controller
- Excellent when
finger sized touch zones are required
Things to Watch
for
- The location of
each switch is permanent
- Size cannot
change
- Resolution
depends solely on the number of rows and columns

Resistive Touch Panels
Overview
Constructed of layers with conductive ITO film
coating on the interior surfaces. Special separator dots are
distributed evenly in a grid pattern across the active area to
separate the conductive interior layers…our dots are 0.035 mm. When
touched the pressure produces an electrical contact which the
controller interpolates from the vertical and horizontal analog
voltages.
Advantages
- Can be
activated by a wide range of inputs
- Gloved Hand
- Stylus
- Fingernails
- Bare Fingers
- Excellent for a
Very Wide Range of Applications
- Point of Sale
- Industrial
controls
- Process
controls
- Medical and
Biotech instrumentation
- Measurement
equipment
- Can be gasket
sealed for Nema 4 and 4X applications
- Excellent
economics especially for 4 Wire Touch Panels
- Can be
constructed of Film to Glass and Film to Plastic
- PGI offers the
highest ISO quality touch panels in the industry
- Highest
Clarity
- Best light
transmission rates (80% +)
- Anti Newton
Ring construction and materials
- Newton
Rings occur when reflected light from the various layers is
distorted. It looks similar to oil on water.
Things to Watch
for
- Lower light
output typically
- Current best in
industry is an 80% light transmission rate
- Newton ring
effects (greasy spotting)
- Scratching can
occur

Capacitive Touch Panels
Overview
Constructed of a glass overlay with an ITO
coating that stores the charge deposited on its surface
electrically. Operates using oscillator circuits located in the
corners that measure the ‘capacitance’ of the area touched. Because
the oscillators vary in frequency the touch panel controller measure
those frequency variations to detect the coordinates of the
touch.
Advantages
-
Recommended for applications requiring ‘Touch”
-
Constructed of Glass and has the highest Clarity factor
-
Extremely Durable and Scratch Resistant
-
Offers Drift-Free stable performance that will not diminish over
time
-
Impervious to grease and water
-
Ideal for frequent use
-
Excellent choice for Nema 4 and 4X applications
Things
to Watch for
-
Will not work with stylus or gloved hands
-
Can be susceptible to breakage
Competing
Technologies
Surface Acoustic
Wave (SAW)
Not
suitable for Nema 4 applications
Not
suitable for high noise areas
Not
suitable for locations subject to vibrations
Infrared
A Legacy
technology that is being replaced by Resistive and Capacitive
Requires
low resolution output from monitor
Can
be activated inadvertently without a touching
Cost
to produce infrared bezel can be quite high
Ability
to detect touch positions is limited by number of LEDs
