Securitizing & Weather-Proofing Parking Meter Keypads

THE CHALLENGE

A leader in the parking meter industry was facing issues with vandalism, weather proofing and securitizing their meters. Following technology trends in the industry, the company had modernized their parking meters from accepting physical coins to electronic transactions. However, the keypad membrane switch on the customer’s meters were short circuiting from the elements and failing due to vandalism. Their previous suppliers failed to provide a solution to protect their meters and prevent failures in the field.

OUR SOLUTION

Drawing on our expertise in weatherproofing membrane switches and keypads, PGI worked directly with the customer’s engineers to devise a solution. Together, we adapted the existing design to provide them with a switch that meets or exceeds IP68 international standard ratings for
withstanding water and dirt. Through a minor redesign to the keypad height and reinforcing the bezel, we were able to almost eliminate damage from vandalism.

RESULTS

With the improved membrane switch design, the customer was able to produce more durable parking meters and minimize failures in the field. This led to reduced expenses and an extended lifespan for their meters.
